The Game I'll call it God's sense of humor. Last week, I said that it was easy to be happy when the it's sunny and everything's going well. . Well, God wanted to see what happens when he sends thunder, lightning and rain our way. That's exactly what he did. Plus, he gave us another long-time rival - Magnetic Fields. I like playing rivals more - there's some history, more character to the players and a little more confidence that they're not invincible.
So, even when Magnetic Fields jumped ahead 4-0 in the top of the first, I think the team was calmer and knew it could do what needed to be done.
Starting with the mighty Jon/Matt combo, B61 quickly has runners on 1st and 2nd. A bad throw to 1st and Jamie not only had a double but his first RBI of the day. Coppertop came in as Jamie's pinch runner and watched as Bird tool the walk to load the bases. Henry, always looking for the dramatic, hit a ball deep to right - Grand Slam!! Sarah, not to be outdone, hit a rip over 3rd base. McLovin followed with a base hit of his own, but unfortunately, Sarah got tagged as she pushed for 3rd. Tam hit a grounder that 3rd base couldn't handle to get us another B61 runner. A big hit by the Colonel, the 3rd lefty in out lineup, sent the ball to right field and Rob turning 3rd to score! 6-4. Our rally would have continued if the MF pitcher hadn't made a great diving stop to rob Amy of a base hit of her own. Our defense quickly shut down MF so we could start our lineup again. On full count, Jonathan popped a bad pitch to center. One out. Matt smacked a line drive that the 2nd basewoman leapt to snag but couldn't hold. Jamie hit another double with Matt getting called out on a questionable call at 3rd which has Adam throwing his score card into the dirt. Steve made up for it with another bae hit to give Henry another RBI as Car Bomb hit another home run over right field. 8-4. In the top of the 3rd, Matt tried a no-look, behind the back snag at his shins which put a runner on 1st with 2 outs. However, Willy caught a short pop running in at full speed before there was any danger. An inebriated Rob started the bottom of the inning with a base hit that brought Willy muttering to the plate, "I'm only hitting fucking grounders." He kept his promise with a slow tomahawk chopper to 3rd. He sped down the line and beat the play for a single. Tam this time stunned the shortstop with a hard grounder, and the bases were loaded for the Colonel. Jim strode to the plate, looking 8 feet tall, on his shoulder, a tree log for a bat. The Colonel surveyed the field and the bases, wound up and hit the first pitch at the pitcher. The pitcher recovered and made the play at 1st, but couldn't prevent the runners from advancing and McLovin scoring. The Colonel had sacrificed himself for the team. Jon took a walk to first, and Matt smacked a long ball to center for a triple. Another RBI single by Jamie brought us to 11-4. By this time, the rain was coming down harder and harder, but neither team wanted to stop. So, B61 took the field again. Jonathan made the first out with a 2-handed grab that sent Adam into orgasmic ecstasy. "Two hands!!" He wanted two hands, so I flipped him two birds, a little uneasy at the thought of him fantasizing over that catch later. Willy made another great running catch across center, but not before MF got a run back. 11-5. A hit by Henry and another by Rob with some smart base running brought runners on 2nd and 3rd for Willy. The single that brings Henry home has Willy pumped and strutting on 1st. Tam finally breaks the pitcher as she forced the walk and convinced MF to send in their shortstop as the new pitcher. This guy has a quick little release with spin, but Jim's not daunted as he hits a grounder down the 1st base line. The 1st baseman bobbled the ball about 20 times, but still can't tag the bag in time. This gave Amy a gleam in her eye as she faced bases loaded with 2 outs - her favorite scenario. Unfortunately, the glory would have to wait for another day. The rain was coming down full force, and I think we had already won by mercy run (my score count must be way off), but MF wanted to keep playing. Probably not the wisest idea with the lightning and mud, but softball's worth the risk. Sure enough, their first batter slips as she tried to run out a foul ball. She's fine after a few ankle hops, and Henry made a smooth play to Rob to make sure she wouldn't have to stress her ankle anymore. Jamie got his first strikeout of the day and Willy finished his strong defensive day with the 3rd out in deep center. With this, Magnetic Fields tossed in the soggy towel, and victory was ours! Memorable Moments Player of the Game Let's keep it simple. Henry and Sarah. Henry got a boatload of RBIs, and Sarah's knocking the ball. |
