The Unknown Game
May 22th Game vs.
BNS
I wasn't here for this game, so I have no idea what really
happened. Tam told me that right field got a lot of action, and Jamie said that
we fell apart for one inning where BNS scored their runs and then we played
really well. Other than that, all I have is Jake's writeup, so here it
is. Obviously, the opinions of this editorial do not necessarily reflect
those of redhooksoftball.com.
The Game, as told by our guest scribe,
Jake P.
On Tuesday BNS took on B61. The game marked the first time
the two teams have met since their 2006 first round playoff series. BNS came
into the game riding high on a three game winning streak. For B61 the story was
much different as they were coming off a recent loss that saw them blow a sixth
inning five run lead. According to the history between the two teams this game
should have been a one sided affair. In their last three head to head meetings
BNS has outscored B61 by a 41 - 8 margin. But since their last meeting B61 has
won the Fall League championship and has continued their great play this season
by beating a very powerful Zombie Hut team in the season opener and taking the
perennial contenders of Element to the brink before blowing the afore mentioned
sixth inning lead. When the game started BNS jumped on top
with a two out three run rally. The rally got started with a questionable two
out double over the third base bag by Jake P. that was followed by four
consecutive singles, including a two RBI single by Stacey P. B61 would strike
back quickly when with one out and one, on slugger Jamie V. hit a hard double
into the gap in left-center field. Chris B. made a great play to keep the ball
from getting by. But as he went down to block the ball he took himself out of
throwing position. In an attempt to move the ball quickly he flipped the ball to
Jake P. who had come over to back up the play. Jake unaware that Chris thrown
him the ball never saw it and Jamie was able to score on the play unchallenged.
In the second the hot hitting of BNS' ladies continued with a leadoff single by
Lindsay K. Aided by a couple of throwing errors and a sac-fly by Tim R. that
scored a runner from second base, BNS had stretched the lead to five. The score
would stay the same until the bottom of the fourth inning. In the frame B61
rallied for three runs. Jamie got things started with a leadoff triple to deep
right field and was followed by RBI singles by Henry, Willy and JJ. Now the
score 7-5 BNS would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth to go up 8-5,
which would turn out to be the final score. The game was at
times sloppy and at times flawless. Each team played terrific defense at times
but both ended up with three errors. B61 threw one runner out at the plate, had
numerous great catches by the out field defense and a terrific diving catch by
Jamie at third to rob Lindsay K. of her second hit of the day. For BNS it was
all about the infield defenders. They were responsible for 19 of the game's 21
outs, including stellar line-drive snags by Chris D. and Stacey P. and an
unassisted double play by Tony C. Now winners of four
straight BNS next faces CAPC in a make-up of a previous rainout. For B61 it is a
make-up vs. the Dirt Dawgs.
