Magnetic Field – June 14th Game

I’m very excited to give you a writeup provided by our very own Alyce.   Between Alex and Alyce, I may be out of a job…

It’s so very exciting to do a little write up. I kind of wish I had notes, but whatever will be will be-

Magnetic Field seemed to be on top of it. They were at the field on time, warming up, many of them had hats that matched their jerseys, but lo and behold, only 1 female member of the team.

Their pitcher came over to tell us that their second woman was stuck in the Battery Tunnel, but was on her way, if we didn't mind waiting.

Sure

but

what about the third woman?

apparently that is the mystical question this season

moving on

B61 took the field at the top of the 1st inning

(Jon, I forget everyone’s nicknames, you can put them in)

Johanna catching

Alex Reinert pitching

Whippet at 1st

Betsy at 2nd

Matt at short

Jamie at 3rd

Steve Reinert in left

Capone in left Center

JJ in right center

Alyce in right

Adam as DH

Amy as back-up catcher

Crazy Alex as back-up 1st

Tamara as back-up 2nd

Kate as back-up right

Julian as back up DH (quoted as saying, “I teach PE, I can’t tell my kids that I’m a sub for the bench”)

The Magnetic Field (or MF, and if they were, we could have a laugh referring to them as M____r F____rs, but they weren't so there goes that lame attempt at humor, I’m a little hung over and tired) gets up to bat and they get a few hits. Our defense wasn't so very pretty that first inning. I recall a lack of vocalization on JJ and Capone's part, resulting in a non-catch. Wait. JJ and Capone failed to make noise? How very out of character. I forget what else happened that inning, but we were kind of sloppy, and MF scored 3 runs.

We get up to bat, and the big guns come out with Matt hitting a double and Jamie slamming a homer to make it 3-2. B61 takes the field again, and decides to tighten up the defense a little. I can’t remember which innings these events took place in or the order in which they occurred, but some highlights in the field were: Betsy’s “you thought I was going to drop it didn’t you?” catch that started with her glove, and ended with her chest, Steve’s hustle out in left field that got the ball in fast enough to snag the lead runner at 3rd (I think Jamie “tagged” him in the face. Nice), JJ deciding to play volleyball off of Betsy’s head (I kept hearing “hot potato! hot potato!” in my head), Matt’s toss to Tamara who gracefully tagged the lead runner on his way to second, and as usual, the beloved 3rd-1st relay that is so hard for our opponents to beat out. yay Jamie and Whippet.

After that 1st inning, they didn’t score again until the last. Fortunately, we had a few nice at-bats, the back-to-back Reinerts leading off proved to be entertaining. With Australian Alex batting, Steve got a little lead-happy, and didn’t get back to 1st base fast enough. Oops. But Alex got to get up in the next inning, and he and Matt scored on Jamie’s solid single.

We were winning 6-3 at the top of the 7th inning, and things got really exciting. MF got a couple of hits, we got a couple of outs, and suddenly the tying run was on 2nd base. The pressure was mounting and Alex walked his first batter of the game. Up next was a lady MF, and they were torn. Half the team wanted the “walking a guy before a girl results in an automatic walk for the girl” rule enforced, but their pitcher/captain wanted her to bat. So she got up to bat. Apparently Alex wanted that rule enforced too, because he walked her. Bases loaded. 2 outs. 6-5. Another lady MF gets up to the plate, very anxious to hit, she took a couple of swings, and Alex struck her out!

That’s about as coherent as I can be. I have this problem where alcohol consumed later tends to “stain back” and make details of events that occurred before the imbibing very blurry.

Oh well

It was a fun nail-biter of a game, and I can’t wait to do it again!

ps- I just remembered that when Johanna got up to bat, MF was talking in the field about “taking the easy out” and she got all fired up about them saying she was an easy out. I heard that too and was outraged! Just outraged... until Betsy explained that they just meant in the field. After she hits. Go for the easy out.

oops

so quick to take offense, what can I say?

Strike ball four!!! I think that’s a dance step. Right?

Oh yeah, and Alex Reinert gets the coveted MVP spot for stepping up to the mound at the last second, pitching a HELL of a game with zero warm-up, entertaining everyone with his tricky behind-the-back fancy schmancy tosses, and getting the strike-out to end and win the game.

So three cheers for the Aussie who can Tossy. (sorry that sucked)
